Kidney stone surgery

Kidney stone surgery
Modern, minimally invasive treatment even in complex cases
Kidney stone surgery today no longer means large incisions or long recovery times. Thanks to endoscopic and laser technologies, most kidney stones can be treated gently, precisely, and effectively.
However, not all kidney stones are the same — complex cases require specialized expertise and appropriate technologyThe surgical method is always chosen individually, based on the specific situation and the patient’s health condition.
When is kidney stone surgery necessary?
Surgery is recommended if
-
The stone does not pass on its own
-
It causes severe pain or renal colic
-
It obstructs the flow of urine
-
It causes inflammation or kidney damage
-
the stone is large or has a complex shape
Surgical methods
The surgical method is always selected individually, based on the characteristics of the stone:
-
size
-
Its location
-
Density
-
Composition
-
The patient’s overall health condition

Minimally invasive kidney stone surgery
Ureteroscopy (URS / RIRS)
A thin endoscope is inserted through the natural urinary tract, allowing the stone to be:
-
Fragmented using a laser
-
Removed without incisions
-
Short recovery time
-
No external scars
-
Suitable for many kidney and ureteral stones
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
A method used for larger or more complex kidney stones.
-
A small puncture tract is created in the kidney
-
Direct access to the stone
-
High effectiveness for large stones
ECIRS (Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery) is a method in which:
- simultaneously access is obtained through the urinary tract and and through a small puncture in the kidney,
- the procedure is performed using two endoscopic approaches simultaneously.
This allows to completely remove even very complex kidney stones in a single procedure.
Compared to other minimally invasive methods, ECIRS:
- ✔️ ensures the highest “stone-free” rate (no stone fragments remain in the kidney),
- ✔️ reduces the need for repeat procedures,
- ✔️ allows treatment of:
- large,
- branched,
- multi-part kidney stones,
- ✔️ is particularly suitable for complex and recurrent cases.
For this reason, ECIRS is considered to be the gold standard for the most complex kidney stone cases.
Dr. Oskars Jakušenoks:
- is the first in the Balticsto introduce
- kidney stone composition analysis as a practically accessible test for every patient,
- the ECIRS method in the treatment of complex kidney stones.
- specializes in endoscopic kidney stone surgery,
- treats patients who:
- have recurrent stones,
- previous surgeries have not achieved a complete result,
- require the highest level of precision.
For the patient, this means:
not only stone removal, but also a long-term solution.

Why is it important to remove the stone completely?
_
Residual stone fragments:
- promote the formation of new stones,
- increase the risk of infection,
- may lead to repeat procedures in the future.
That is why, in complex cases, methods are chosen that provide the most complete result possible in the first procedure.
